What Is a Chemical Dosing Pump and How Does It Work?

Different types of pumps are used in industries or factories for injecting chemicals or fluids. Chemical dosing pumps are designed for injecting reagents, chemicals, or substances into gas, water, or steam.  These pumps are smaller in size and provide a good flow rate for higher control.   The pumps are designed to be used in tough situations where the temperature is high or in high-pressure environments. The second type of pulse injection pumps also make use of a diaphragm mechanism where a solenoid coil takes the injection and injects it into the pulses.   • Lobe pumps have meshing gear impellers wherein a fixed amount of liquid is sent through the impellers.  Fluids having high viscosities are sent through such pumps. The flow rates should be low or minimum. 

  • Peristaltic pumps are accurate for dosing chemicals. A bent tube that is very flexible is used for passing the chemical fluids.  The flow is managed by a mechanical arm on the outside.  The product in the tube is pushed into the dosing tube.  

The working of the chemical dosing pump happens with the different components. The chemical dosing pump is designed with various components for its function. The main components are:-

  • Chemical tank: - A tank works as storage to hold material to be dosed.  

  • Dosing pump; - It includes a dosing line, suction line, and an inlet. There are different sizes of dosing pumps and varieties of materials as per the application. A dosing line is a tube that is of PE, PVC, or stainless steel material. It is used for high-pressure situations. 

  • Injector: - As the name suggests, they are used to inject the chemicals into the flow. 

  • Foot valve:- This is a one-way valve attached to the suction line.  It is placed in the drum 

  • Control system: - The control systems are highly advanced nowadays which helps in smooth functioning.  They check the accuracy at different times. 


A certain amount of liquid is drawn which is measured by the dosing pump into its chamber.  Later a chemical is injected by the pump into the tank or pipe containing the fluid. The pump works with an air actuator or electric motor.  The pump is turned on and off with the help of a controller.  The flow rate of the liquid is managed by the controller.  The control systems in different pumps are different and thus the models are selected.
